Unifying Urban Complexity under the ‘New Soul of District’

Located in Thonburi, Central Pinklao stands as one of Bangkok’s most storied retail landmarks. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the complex underwent a major revitalization centered around the narrative concept of the “New Soul of District.” Having served as a vital urban hub for three decades, the target for this intervention was to reshape the dynamic, highly complex streetscape into a cohesive visual threshold.

Over decades of continuous operation, the mall’s forecourt evolved into an intricate spatial puzzle. The compact site had to accommodate multiple overlapping functional programs: drop-off zones, taxi stands, pedestrian corridors, van transit hubs. To resolve this friction, the design team established a single, unified architectural vocabulary that seamlessly weaves these disparate vehicular and pedestrian flows into a single memorable identity.

When Central Pinklao opened 30 years ago, its architectural identity was grounded in ancient Greek aesthetics - most notably marked by a central atrium statue of Caesar Augustus. Rather than discarding this heritage, the landscape design translates these classical roots into a contemporary spatial experience. Drawing from the "New Soul of District" framework, the team utilized the symbolism of the sun alongside the numbers '3' and '0' to drive the overall geometric language. The planting strategy maximizes green coverage while maintaining strict site functionality.

By synthesizing classical roots with contemporary urban infrastructure, the Central Pinklao landscape renovation untangles a dense programmatic knot, reaffirming the site's role as the timeless perpetual of Thonburi. Delivering both direct and indirect value to the mall as well as the community.
